Photo Prepress and Print-Ready Files
Prepress prepares a finished image for the press, so that what you approved on screen survives printing. UNO Postproduction handles it from New York for photographers, magazines and brands.
What prepress covers
Prepress is usually the last step before files go to the printer:
- Converting from RGB to the printer's CMYK profile.
- Keeping total ink within the printer's limit.
- Sharpening for the final size and paper.
- Setting size, resolution and bleed.
- Checking the areas that matter most: skin, product color and deep blacks.
Why images change in print
Screens can show colors that ink can't reach, especially saturated blues, greens and oranges. Converting to CMYK brings those colors inside what the press can print, and bright fabric is usually where the change shows first. Good prepress decides how that happens, instead of leaving it to an automatic conversion.
Ask your printer first
Every printer and publication has its own specifications. Send us the color profile, total ink limit, bleed and file format with your brief. If you're not sure what to ask for, how to prepare retouched images for print explains each one.
Prepress often matters most on a magazine cover or on a campaign that runs in several formats.
